Description
Why It’s Done:
The test is recommended when:
• A fungal infection is suspected (e.g., ringworm, candidiasis, aspergillosis, or systemic fungal infections).
• A patient has persistent skin, nail, or respiratory symptoms not responding to treatment.
• There is a need to differentiate fungal infections from bacterial or viral infections.
• The patient is immunocompromised (e.g., due to HIV, cancer, or organ transplant) and at higher risk for invasive fungal infections.
• Monitoring treatment response in known fungal infections.
Preparation:
Preparation depends on the sample type:
• Skin/Nail/Hair: Avoid applying creams, ointments, or nail polish at least 24 hours before testing.
• Sputum: May be asked to provide a deep cough sample early in the morning.
• Blood/Urine: No special preparation is usually needed.
• Tissue biopsy: If required, your doctor will explain the procedure and any fasting or preparation needed.
