Categories: ,

The EBV NA IgG Test detects IgG antibodies to the nuclear antigen of the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) in the blood. EBV is a common virus that causes infectious mononucleosis (mono) and is also linked to several other conditions, including chronic fatigue, some cancers, and autoimmune disorders.
The presence of EBV NA IgG antibodies usually indicates a past infection—these antibodies typically appear several weeks after infection and stay in the body for life.

    Why It’s Done

Doctors may order this test to:
    • Confirm past infection with EBV.
    • Distinguish between recent and past infections, especially when used alongside other EBV markers like VCA IgM, VCA IgG, and EBNA IgM.
    • Evaluate unexplained fatigue, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, or fever—symptoms that may suggest mononucleosis.
    • Support diagnosis of chronic EBV-related conditions.
    • Monitor immune response in immunocompromised individuals.

    Preparation

    • No special preparation is required.
    • Inform your doctor about any recent infections, vaccinations, or medications, especially if you’re immunocompromised or taking immunosuppressants.
    • The test is done using a simple blood sample drawn from a vein in your arm.
