Description
Why It’s Done
Doctors may order the Electrolytes Serum Test to:
• Evaluate kidney function, as the kidneys are crucial in regulating electrolyte levels.
• Monitor hydration status in patients who may be dehydrated or over-hydrated.
• Diagnose electrolyte imbalances caused by conditions such as renal disease, heart disease, diabetes, or gastrointestinal issues (e.g., vomiting, diarrhea).
• Assess fluid and acid-base balance in patients undergoing treatments like chemotherapy, or those taking diuretics or other medications that affect electrolyte levels.
• Monitor critical conditions: electrolyte imbalances can affect the heart, muscles, and nerves, so the test may be used to monitor patients with conditions like heart arrhythmias or muscle weakness.
Preparation
• Fasting: Usually, fasting is not required for this test, but you should follow any specific instructions from your healthcare provider.
• Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking, especially diuretics, ACE inhibitors, or any drugs that affect kidney or fluid balance, as these can affect electrolyte levels.
• A blood sample is drawn from a vein, typically in your arm, for this test.
