Description
Why It’s Done
The Digoxin (Lanoxin) Test is commonly performed to:
• Monitor therapeutic levels: To ensure that the digoxin concentration in the blood is within the therapeutic range for effective treatment. Blood levels are typically measured after the drug has reached a steady state in the body, which usually takes 5 to 7 days of regular dosing.
• Detect digoxin toxicity: Digoxin toxicity can cause dangerous symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, visual disturbances, and arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats). The test helps identify if the level is too high and potentially toxic.
• Adjust dosage: If the test reveals that the digoxin level is either too low (ineffective) or too high (toxic), it can guide healthcare providers in adjusting the dosage.
• Monitor heart conditions: For patients being treated for heart failure, atrial fibrillation, or supraventricular arrhythmias, the test helps ensure that digoxin is being used safely and effectively.
• Assess drug interactions: Some medications can interfere with the way digoxin is metabolized or excreted, leading to altered blood levels. This test can help monitor how other drugs are affecting digoxin levels.
Preparation
• Timing of the test: The blood sample is typically taken 12 hours after the last dose of digoxin. This timing ensures that the blood level is not too affected by recent dosing and is representative of steady-state levels.
• Medication history: Inform your healthcare provider about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, supplements, and herbal remedies. Certain medications can interact with digoxin and affect its blood levels.
• Avoid alcohol: Alcohol can affect the absorption and metabolism of digoxin, so it may be recommended to avoid alcohol prior to the test.
• Fasting: Generally, fasting is not required for this test, but you should follow any specific instructions provided by your healthcare provider.
• Hydration: Adequate hydration is typically recommended, unless your healthcare provider gives you specific instructions regarding fluid intake
