Description
Why It’s Done
This test is performed to:
• Ensure water safety for human consumption or use in sensitive environments.
• Detect harmful microorganisms, such as E. coli, Pseudomonas, Legionella, and fungi.
• Monitor water quality in industries like food processing, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare.
• Comply with regulatory standards for potable water, swimming pools, cooling towers, and hospital settings.
• Identify sources of contamination in case of outbreaks or equipment failures.
Preparation
• Collect the sample in a sterile, properly labeled container provided by the laboratory.
• Do not rinse the container before collection.
• Follow aseptic techniques to avoid contamination during sample collection.
• If transporting the sample to a lab, keep it cool (2–8°C) and deliver it as soon as possible, preferably within 2–4 hours.
• Inform the lab of the source and intended use of the water (e.g., drinking water, industrial, medical use), as this may influence testing methods.
