Description
Why It’s Done:
This test is commonly recommended for:
• Men experiencing symptoms of a genital or urinary tract infection, such as pain during urination, painful ejaculation, or pelvic discomfort.
• Infertility investigations, especially if infection is suspected as a contributing factor.
• Cases of chronic prostatitis or recurring infections.
• Post-surgical or post-catheterization infections involving the male reproductive tract.
Purpose of the test:
• Identify the cause of infection in the reproductive tract.
• Determine the appropriate antibiotics for treatment.
• Guide targeted therapy, avoiding ineffective or broad-spectrum antibiotics.
Preparation:
• Abstain from ejaculation for 2 to 5 days before giving the sample, as recommended by your doctor or lab.
• Avoid antibiotics for at least 48–72 hours prior to the test (if possible), unless otherwise advised by your doctor, as they may interfere with test results.
• The semen sample is typically collected via masturbation into a sterile container provided by the lab.
• Ensure clean hands and genitals before collecting the sample to avoid contamination.
• Follow any lab-specific instructions, especially regarding sample timing and delivery
