Description
Why It’s Done:
The Bismuth Blood Test may be ordered to:
• Evaluate suspected bismuth toxicity, especially in individuals taking bismuth-containing medications over long periods
• Monitor occupational or accidental exposure to bismuth
• Assess symptoms of toxicity, which may include:
o Confusion or memory loss
o Headaches
o Tremors or muscle weakness
o Kidney dysfunction
o Blue-black discoloration of gums (in severe cases)
It may be used alongside a 24-hour urine bismuth test for a more complete picture of bismuth accumulation and excretion.
Preparation:
• No fasting or special preparation is typically required for this test.
• Inform your doctor of any medications or supplements you’re taking, especially if they contain bismuth or other heavy metals.
• Avoid recent ingestion of bismuth-containing products before the test, unless otherwise instructed.
• A blood sample will be collected from a vein in your arm for laboratory analysis
