Anti Thrombin Iii Activity (Functional)

3,500.00

The Anti-Thrombin III (AT III) Activity test measures the functional activity of antithrombin III protein in the blood. Unlike antigen tests that measure the quantity of the protein, this test evaluates how well the antithrombin is working to inhibit blood clotting factors such as thrombin and factor Xa.
This functional assay helps detect deficiencies that may not be evident by antigen levels alone, indicating an increased risk of abnormal clot formation (thrombosis).

    Description

    Why It’s Done:

    This test is ordered to:
    • Diagnose functional antithrombin III deficiency, which can be hereditary or acquired
    • Evaluate unexplained or recurrent venous thromboembolism (deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism)
    • Monitor anticoagulant therapy effectiveness, especially heparin, which depends on antithrombin activity
    • Investigate causes of recurrent miscarriages or clotting disorders linked to antithrombin dysfunction

    Preparation:

    • No special preparation is typically required.
    • Inform your healthcare provider about any anticoagulant or blood-thinning medications, as they may affect test results.
    • Blood is drawn from a vein, usually in the arm.
    • Fasting is not necessary.
