Description
Why It’s Done
The serum amylase test is commonly used to help diagnose or monitor conditions related to the pancreas and digestive system. It is usually recommended when a person shows symptoms such as:
• Severe abdominal pain
• Nausea and vomiting
• Fever
• Loss of appetite
Conditions the test may help diagnose or monitor:
• Acute pancreatitis (most common use)
• Chronic pancreatitis
• Pancreatic pseudocysts
• Pancreatic cancer
• Gallbladder disease
• Mumps (infection of the salivary glands)
• Blockage of pancreatic or salivary ducts
Elevated or decreased amylase levels can help guide diagnosis and treatment.
Preparation for the Test
• Fasting: May be required (typically 2–8 hours) – follow your doctor’s instructions.
• Medications: Inform your healthcare provider about any medications, vitamins, or supplements you’re taking, as some drugs (like birth control pills, diuretics, or opiates) can affect results.
• No special preparation beyond standard blood test precautions is usually needed.
