Description
Why It’s Done
The test helps in diagnosing conditions involving abnormal fluid accumulation and determining whether that fluid is related to pancreatic disease or other issues. It is often used to:
• Diagnose pancreatitis (acute or chronic) when fluid accumulates in the abdominal cavity
• Detect pancreatic pseudocysts that may leak amylase-rich fluid
• Differentiate between types of fluid accumulation (e.g., distinguishing pancreatic causes from infection, malignancy, or trauma)
• Investigate pleural effusions to determine if they are related to pancreatitis or esophageal rupture
Elevated levels of amylase in fluid may indicate:
• Acute pancreatitis
• Pancreatic duct rupture
• Pseudocyst
• Bowel perforation
• Esophageal rupture
Preparation for the Test
• Fasting: Not usually required for the fluid test itself, but fasting may be necessary if combined with other tests.
• Procedure Preparation: Since the fluid must be collected from inside the body, preparation may include:
o Consent for the procedure
o Emptying the bladder before certain procedures
o Following your healthcare provider’s instructions regarding food, drink, and medications
• Inform your doctor about:
o Any current medications
o Bleeding disorders
o Allergies (especially to local anesthetics, if used)
