Description
Why It’s Done:
• To diagnose allergy to cat dander in individuals experiencing symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy or watery eyes, coughing, wheezing, or asthma triggered by exposure to cats.
• To identify environmental allergens responsible for respiratory or skin allergy symptoms.
• To guide allergen avoidance strategies and treatment plans including medications or immunotherapy.
• To evaluate allergic causes in people who live with or are frequently exposed to cats.
Preparation:
• For blood tests:
– No fasting or special preparation required.
– Continue medications unless otherwise instructed by your healthcare provider.
• For skin tests:
– Avoid antihistamines for 3 to 7 days prior to testing as they can interfere with results (consult your doctor).
– Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking.
– Wear clothing that allows easy access to the skin, such as short sleeves.
