Description
Why It’s Done:
• To evaluate disorders related to abnormal aldosterone production, such as primary aldosteronism (Conn’s syndrome) or secondary causes of high blood pressure.
• To investigate causes of hypertension, especially if resistant to treatment.
• To assess electrolyte imbalances related to aldosterone dysfunction.
• To monitor treatment effectiveness in conditions affecting aldosterone levels.
Preparation:
• Your healthcare provider may ask you to stop certain medications (like diuretics, ACE inhibitors, or spironolactone) before the test as they can affect aldosterone levels.
• Blood pressure and posture may be monitored or controlled before sampling, as aldosterone levels can vary with position and stress.
• Follow any specific instructions from your healthcare provider regarding fasting or medication restrictions.
• Avoid strenuous exercise and stress before the test.
