Description
Why It’s Done:
In Adults (Non-Pregnant):
The AFP – Serum test is used to:
• Screen for and monitor liver cancer (especially hepatocellular carcinoma)
• Detect germ cell tumors of the ovaries or testes
• Monitor treatment response or recurrence of certain cancers
• Aid in diagnosing chronic liver diseases, such as cirrhosis or hepatitis
In Pregnancy:
• Help detect neural tube defects (like spina bifida) or abdominal wall defects in the fetus
• Evaluate gestational age and multiple pregnancies
Preparation:
• No special preparation is needed for the AFP serum test.
• A simple blood sample is drawn from a vein in the arm.
• If part of prenatal screening, accurate gestational age information is important for proper interpretation.
• Inform your healthcare provider of any medications, existing conditions, or if you’re pregnant.
