Why It’s Done:
• To accurately diagnose acute leukemia and differentiate between subtypes such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
• To identify genetic mutations or chromosomal abnormalities that influence prognosis and treatment options.
• To guide selection of targeted therapies or chemotherapy regimens.
• To monitor disease progression or remission during and after treatment.
• To detect minimal residual disease or relapse early.
Preparation:
• Blood tests typically require no special preparation; fasting is usually not necessary.
• Bone marrow aspiration/biopsy may require fasting for several hours prior and avoidance of certain medications, as directed by your healthcare provider.
• Inform your healthcare provider about any medications, allergies, or medical conditions before testing.
• Follow any specific instructions provided by your medical team regarding the bone marrow procedure.
