The 5-Hydroxyindoleacetic Acid (5-HIAA) test measures the amount of 5-HIAA, a breakdown product of serotonin, in the urine. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation and other bodily functions. Elevated levels of 5-HIAA in urine are often associated with serotonin-secreting tumors called carcinoid tumors.

Description

Why It’s Done:

• To help diagnose carcinoid tumors and other neuroendocrine tumors that produce excess serotonin.
• To monitor treatment effectiveness in patients diagnosed with carcinoid tumors.
• To investigate symptoms such as flushing, diarrhea, or wheezing that may be related to carcinoid syndrome.
• To detect recurrence of carcinoid tumors after treatment.

Preparation:

• A 24-hour urine collection is required for this test.
• Avoid foods high in serotonin (e.g., bananas, walnuts, pineapples, tomatoes, plums, avocados) for at least 2-3 days before and during urine collection, as they can falsely raise 5-HIAA levels.
• Avoid medications that can affect serotonin levels or interfere with the test, such as acetaminophen, cough suppressants, and certain antidepressants, unless advised otherwise by your healthcare provider.
• Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions carefully for accurate urine collection.
• Inform your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you are taking.
