CT Enterography (CTE) is a specialized CT scan used to visualize the small intestine in detail. It helps diagnose conditions such as Crohn’s disease, small bowel tumors, infections, and other inflammatory or obstructive disorders. This imaging test involves drinking an oral contrast agent to enhance the visibility of the intestines while a CT scanner takes detailed images of the abdominal area.

    Test Preparation

To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guideline:

    Fasting
    • Avoid eating solid food for at least 4-6 hours before the scan.
    • Clear liquids (such as water, black coffee, or tea without milk) may be allowed.
    Oral Contrast Intake
    • Patients are required to drink a special oral contrast solution before the test.
    • The contrast helps distend the intestines, providing better visualization.
    IV Contrast Administration
    • In most cases, an intravenous (IV) contrast is also given during the scan to enhance blood vessels and inflammation detection.
    • Inform your doctor if you have a history of allergic reactions to contrast dye or kidney disease.
    Medication Adjustments
    • If you take medications, consult your doctor about whether you should adjust or skip any doses.
    • Diabetic patients may need special instructions regarding insulin or metformin use.
    Clothing and Accessories
    • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
    • Remove metal objects like jewelry, belts, or piercings to prevent interference with the scan.
    Inform Your Doctor If:
    • You are pregnant or suspect pregnancy (as radiation exposure is involved).
    • You have a history of kidney disease (IV contrast may require kidney function assessment).
    • You have any allergies, particularly to iodine-based contrast dyes.
