An X-Ray IVP (Intravenous Pyelogram) is a specialized imaging test used to evaluate the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. A contrast dye is injected into a vein (usually in your arm), which travels through the bloodstream to the urinary tract. X-ray images are then taken at intervals to track how the dye moves through the urinary system.

    Test Preparation

Proper preparation ensures clear images and accurate results.

    Fasting:
    • Do not eat or drink anything for at least 6–8 hours before the test.
     Bowel Preparation:
    • Your doctor may recommend a laxative or enema the evening before the test to empty the bowels. This reduces gas or stool that can interfere with imaging.
    Allergies:
    • Inform your doctor or technician if you have:
    • A known allergy to iodine, contrast dye, or seafood
    • Asthma or hay fever
    • Kidney problems or diabetes (especially if you take metformin)
     Medications:
    • Take only medications approved by your doctor on the day of the test.
    • You may be asked to temporarily stop certain medicines, especially metformin (to protect kidney function).
    Pregnancy:
    • Inform the radiology team if you are or might be pregnant.
