An X-Ray Coccyx (Lateral View) is a diagnostic imaging test that captures a side view of the coccyx (also known as the tailbone), which is the small, triangular bony structure at the bottom of the spine. This view helps in assessing the alignment, shape, and any potential injury or abnormalities of the coccyx.

    Test Preparation

Generally, minimal preparation is required, but here are key guidelines:

    • Clothing: You may be asked to wear a hospital gown to avoid interference from clothing.
    • Remove metal objects: Remove jewelry, belts, or any metallic items around the waist and hip area.
    • Bowel Preparation (if advised): In some cases, the doctor may recommend a mild enema or laxative before the test to clear the bowel, as stool can obstruct the view of the coccyx.
    • Pregnancy: Inform the radiographer if you are or might be pregnant.

    During the Test
    • You will be asked to lie on your side on the X-ray table.
    • Your knees may be bent slightly to help position the pelvis and coccyx correctly.
    • The technician will ensure proper alignment and then take the lateral X-ray.
    • You must remain still during the scan to avoid blurry images.
    • The procedure is quick and painless, typically lasting about 5–10 minutes.
    After the Test
    • You can return to your normal activities right away.
    • A radiologist will analyze the image, and your doctor will review the findings and discuss next steps if needed.
