An MRI Whole Spine (Scoliosis) scan is a specialized imaging test used to evaluate the entire spinal column in cases of scoliosis. It provides detailed images of the vertebrae, spinal cord, discs, and surrounding soft tissues, helping doctors assess:

  •  Spinal curvature severity and progression
  •  Abnormalities in the spinal cord or nerves
  •  Disc degeneration, herniation, or compression
  •  Congenital spinal deformities
  •  Spinal tumors, infections, or cysts

This scan is often recommended if scoliosis is suspected to have an underlying neurological cause, such as tethered cord syndrome or Chiari malformation.

It may be performed with or without contrast, depending on the condition being evaluated

Contrast Injection Considerations (If Contrast is Used)
    • A gadolinium-based contrast agent may be injected for better visualization of the spinal cord, nerves, and blood vessels.
    • Inform your doctor if you have:
    • Kidney disease or reduced kidney function, as contrast may not be safe.
    • Allergies to contrast agents or previous allergic reactions.
